With short needles like 0.5 mm, microneedle your scalp about once a week, on the same evening each week. Our kit's usage guide keeps that weekly rhythm for four months in a row, 16 sessions, then drops to once a month for upkeep.
New to scalp needling? Start with our at-home scalp microneedling guide, which covers who should skip it and what to keep off the skin, and how to use a derma stamp on your scalp for the press-and-lift technique. This page is only about timing: which needle length gets which spacing, a dated 16-week calendar, and what to do when a week goes sideways.
The short answer: about once a week at 0.5 mm
For a 0.5 mm stamp or roller, once a week is enough. Nobody has a settled number. A review of the research on Perfect Hair Health says there are no concrete answers yet on how often to microneedle, and the intervals tested so far in people run from once a week to once every three weeks. What really moves the schedule is needle length. Rhute's frequency guide puts 0.25 to 0.5 mm at one to two sessions a week with at least a day between them, needles close to 1.0 mm at a full seven days, and anything past 1.5 mm in a clinic. Our kit sits at the simple end of that range: one 5-minute session, one evening a week, for four months, then once a month. If your scalp is still pink, tender or broken on session night, push the session back a day or two. Results vary.
How often by needle length
| Needle length | Spacing in Rhute's guide | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 to 0.5 mm (home tools; ours is 0.5 mm) | One to two times a week, at least a day apart | Once a week fits the range, and it's a lot easier to keep up for four months. |
| About 1.0 mm | A full seven days; redness for a day or two | Not the tool in our kit. |
| Over 1.5 mm | Clinic only, two to four weeks apart | Forum schedules for long needles don't carry over to a 0.5 mm stamp. |
Why the sessions are spaced at all
Each session leaves tiny marks in the skin, and Perfect Hair Health stresses that the scalp should fully recover before the next one. It cites research that skin needled to 0.5 to 0.6 mm can show redness and other signs of a reaction for 24 to 48 hours. That's what the week off is for, so each session starts on a calm scalp.
Your 16-week calendar, with real dates
The kit comes in months. Each month has four single-use domes and four serum ampoules, one of each per weekly session, so four sessions use up a month and four months give you the 16 sessions in our usage guide. Here's how that looks on a real calendar if you start on Sunday, November 1, 2026:
- Month 1: sessions 1 to 4 on November 1, 8, 15 and 22.
- Month 2: sessions 5 to 8, from November 29 (with the second month's domes and ampoules) to December 20.
- Months 3 and 4: sessions 9 to 16, from December 27 to February 14, 2027. That's 15 weeks after the first session, since the first one counts as week one.
- After that it's upkeep, one session a month. The first Sunday of each month works, for example, starting March 7, 2027.
The same plan with one late week. Say session 6 falls on Sunday, December 6, and you can't get to it until Tuesday, December 8. Do it Tuesday, then count seven days from there. Every session after that moves to Tuesday, and session 16 lands on Tuesday, February 16, 2027, two days later than planned. You haven't lost anything. The ampoule you didn't use on Sunday just becomes Tuesday's ampoule. For the steps of each session, see the derma stamp guide linked above.
Late, missed or tender weeks: what to do
Before each session, take a look at the area you're about to work on, then find your case:
| Your situation on session night | What to do |
|---|---|
| Scalp looks the way it did before the last session | Go ahead as planned. |
| Still pink or tender from last week | Wait a day or two, then check again. |
| A cut, breakout, scab or sunburn on the area | Skip that spot tonight. Do the rest only if it's calm. |
| Redness from the last session lasted past 48 hours | Rhute reads this as the cue to space sessions further apart. Keep to one a week and press more lightly. |
| You missed the whole week | Do it on the next evening you can and count seven days from that date. Your plan ends a week later. |
| You have two ampoules left at month end | Still one per session, never two in one night. Start the next month once they're used. |
| The same evening keeps clashing with your week | Move to a quieter evening for good and count weekly from there. |
| Nothing seems to change and you want a second weekly session | Stay at one. The next section explains why. |
Stop line. If the skin still hasn't settled after a full extra week, stop and have someone look at your scalp before you continue.
Why more often is not better
Adding a session feels like speeding things up, and it's an easy mistake to make. In a HairLossTalk thread on microneedling frequency, one member who needled the temples daily at 0.5 mm wrote that the skin was constantly red. Another member in the same thread did something quite different. That's the trouble with forum schedules: each one is one person's routine. Where the sources above do agree is on why you space sessions: the scalp needs time to recover. Rhute adds that one missed session has little impact, and that you should pick your schedule back up rather than double up. The kit is built around that idea, with four ampoules a month for one session a week.
Months 5 and on, and when to judge
Upkeep is one session a month, on the evening you already use. If an upkeep month slips, do that session on the next free evening and carry on monthly from there. To judge the routine, trust photos over the mirror. Take them the evening before each month's first session, same light, same angle, so they fall on a date you already have. At the end of month four, put your first photo next to the latest one. What people hope to see is fuller-looking, thicker-looking hair with more volume. Results vary.
How the kit keeps count of your weeks
The hard part of a weekly routine is remembering which week you're on. The Reviven kit does that part for you: each month comes with four single-use domes and four serum ampoules, so when the ampoules run out, that month is done. You can see the kit on the Reviven home page.
