Serum Before or After Microneedling Your Scalp: The Right Order

By The Reviven team. Written from our kit's usage guide and the sources linked below.

Serum goes on after microneedling, not before, and it goes onto a clean, dry scalp with a clean tool. The esthetician and the clinic pages we read all agree on that much. Where they split is how soon after: some say right away, one says wait a day, and nobody gives a tested number. So here is the rule we would use. Clean the scalp and the tool first, then needle gently (the basics are in our at-home scalp microneedling guide) with nothing else on the skin, then apply a plain serum. If its label says to use it with the tool, follow the label. If it is a different bottle, give the scalp the day first. For the next day or two, skip strong acids, alcohol-based products and heat. With our kit the serum goes into the stamp, so the order is already built in. Results vary.

Needle first, serum second

Patricia Pol, a licensed esthetician quoted by New Beauty, says "Microneedling the skin and scalp before applying serum can be beneficial," because the tiny channels the needles make may help the serum soak in. The same article is more careful about what that means for hair with short at-home needles. It calls the benefit "kind of unclear." A dermatology practice, Mona Dermatology, lands on the same order: roll first, then apply a serum or oil afterward. Neither one tells you to put serum on first.

Why the scalp stays bare while you needle

Only one source we found takes on serum-first directly, a hair-care blog called Traya. Its warning is blunt: "Rolling over product residue pushes it into deeper layers," and if the channels are not clean, you are "inviting bacteria in." It also says to avoid makeup, sunscreen and heavy oils before rolling. So the working rule is simple: nothing on the skin but the needles until you are done.

What to do on session night, by case

Timing is where the sources part ways, so the table below is our decision rule, built from what they say. Mona Dermatology and New Beauty give no wait time. Traya says to wait at least 24 hours before a hair serum, unless a dermatologist tells you otherwise.

Your situation What to do
Your serum comes with the tool, or its label says to use it with the tool Follow the label. That is the tiebreaker.
A separate bottle you already own Take the cautious end: needle tonight, serum the next day.
You put something on the scalp earlier (oil, sunscreen, styling product) Wash it off with something mild, let the scalp dry, then start.
You already applied serum and want to needle over it Do not. Wash it off, dry the scalp, and start the order over.
Scalp is cut, broken or has an active condition Skip the session. Mona Dermatology names eczema, psoriasis and open wounds.

What to keep off the scalp right after

A clinic page, Dr. Serkan Aygın Clinic, gives a skip list for the first 24 to 48 hours: harsh shampoos, alcohol-based products, strong acids, saunas and other intense heat, and hair dye or bleach. PMU Hub suggests keeping the scalp dry for at least a few hours and washing only with mild, fragrance and paraben-free products. Traya adds a plain rule for whatever you put on afterward: no unclean products.

Before the session: the clean start

The order only works if you begin clean. Pol puts it in one line: "You must always begin by sanitizing the device." Traya soaks the tool in 70% isopropyl alcohol for 5 to 10 minutes, and it suggests a mild shampoo earlier so the scalp is dry when you start. Pol also reminds you to be gentle during the needling itself and not press hard on the tool.

How our kit handles the order

With our kit the serum and the needles come together, so there is no order to work out. You pour one ampoule into the stamp, close the cap, and turn it upside down for about 5 minutes. Then you tap it lightly over the thinning areas on a clean, dry scalp. Leave the serum on for 4 to 6 hours before washing. Each month brings four ampoules and four single-use domes, one of each per weekly session, so there is never a second bottle to layer on top. The full steps are in how to use a derma stamp on your scalp, and the schedule is in how often to microneedle your scalp. You can see the kit on the Reviven home page. It is a ritual that fits in about 5 minutes a week. Results vary.

Your session-night order, in short

  • Earlier in the day, wash with something mild and let the scalp dry fully.
  • Clean the tool the way its instructions say.
  • No oils, sunscreen or styling products on the scalp.
  • Needle gently.
  • Serum after, or with the stamp if it holds the serum, as ours does.
  • For a day or two, hold off on strong acids, alcohol-based products and heat.

Stop line. If the scalp is still tender, red or broken from the last session, wait before the next one.

Common questions

Do I have to wait 24 hours before the serum? One source says yes for a hair serum, and two do not mention a wait. The kit's own guide uses the serum within the session, as part of the stamp. With a different bottle, the cautious call is to wait a day.

How long until I can wash my hair? The kit's guide says not to wash the area for 4 to 6 hours. Other pages say keep it dry for a few hours, and the clinic page lists harsh shampoos as a no for 24 to 48 hours. If your own serum's label is stricter, go with the label.

Can I use a vitamin or acid serum right after? Not on the first day or two. Strong acids are on the clinic's skip list for 24 to 48 hours.

Can I use an oil instead of a serum afterward? Mona Dermatology says a serum or oil afterward. Traya says to avoid heavy oils before rolling, so save oils for after, and keep them clean.
